Abstract

A study is presented of the effect of laser parameters (time distribution, spatial distribution and speed) on both the finishing quality of austenitic stainless steel and its microstructure. An Nd-YAG laser with nitrogen as protection gas has been used. The samples were studied by SEM, metallography and microprobe analysis. At 500 Hz and 10 % of the spatial distribution, any increase of the time distribution produces higher power; this effect allows working at higher speed. Quality increases with the cutting speed. The laser cutting of 304 stainless steel using speeds higher than 200 mm/min and power lower than 1,000 W and a nitrogen flow of 18 bar of pressure do not produce significative changes in the structure.
