Abstract


The effect of hydrides on the mechanical behaviour of the zirconium-alloy cladding employed as nuclear fuel barrier was studied in this paper. Ring tensile tests were performed on samples with different hydrogen concentrations and a 3D finite element model was developed to simulate the test. Hydrides were introduced by cathodic charging with hydrogen and subsequent thermal treatment of cladding samples. The tests show that there is not a significant degradation of the mechanical behaviour at the hydrogen concentrations tested, although the fracture micromechanisms depend on the hydrogen content.
