Abstract

TiN coatings have been successfully produced on Ti6Al4V alloy by gas nitriding in order to modify surface properties. Several characteristics of the coatings relevant to their applications in total joint replacement have been studied. Wear resistance and hardness were improved dramatically for nitrided samples compared with those un-nitrided. Substrate adhesion of the coating was studied by means of a three point bend test system. Characterisation of the TiN layer was carried by optical microscopy, SEM and XRD. Vickers hardness values up to 700 were obtained.
