A kinetic study on the magnesium removal from molten aluminium alloys using submerged SiO2 powders injection is presented. The variables analysed were the chemical content and the particle size of the solid agents, the melt temperature and the injection rate. It was possible to decrease the magnesium content from 1.2 to 0.02wt %, with a low inclusions content. As the main mechanism of the magnesium removal process is of diffusive type, the global process rate increases as the temperature and the injection rate are increased, while decreasing particle size. In all the cases studied, a first order global process was determined and the global rate constants were also evaluated.
