Abstract

The effects of several thermal treatments at different temperatures and in different atmospheres on the physico-chemical transformation of hydrometallurgical processes wastes containing toxic elements such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium and selenium, are described. The extraction efficiency of those toxic elements related to the thermal treatments is also studied paying special attention to the disposal of arsenic from these wastes. Even though with some of these treatments it is possible to eliminate about 97 % of the toxic elements and at the same time to multiply by a factor of 2 the concentration of the metallic values, it seems that the decontamination of the samples, in controlled atmospheres, needs several successive thermal treatments.
