Abstract

This paper shows a micrographic analysis of the carbonaceous interphase fibre-matrix of a SiC/C/SiC ceramic-matrix composite (CMC) made by CVI (chemical vapour infiltration). The intephase thickness, critical for a good mechanical behaviour of the composite, is smaller than 200 nm. It has been observed using SEM, TEM and AFM. The paper aim is to compare the potential of AFM technique relative to the conventional microscopical techniques when trying to characterize a feature with structural details below 10 nm size.
