Abstract

This review presents an introduction to the filtration of liquid or solid particles suspended in a gas medium (aerosol). Filtration is probably the most widely used technique for particle elimination from gas streams. After a brief history of aerosol filtration, the most important filtration mechanisms (Brownian diffusion, interception, inertial impaction, and electrostatic capture) are discussed. Most of this review is devoted to the description and design equations of the principal aerosol collection equipments, namely, fibrous filters, granular bed filters and industrial fabric filters.
