In this work are presented the metallographic characteristics of an alloy obtained by means of the application of a laser beam on a titanium carbide powder layer deposited in a steel surface. The treated steel was studied by optic microscopy and three well defined metallographic interesting zones were observed. Texture patterns corresponding of these zones were obtained from these images. The identification and the segmentation of these zones using the method of Difference Histogram (DH) and a Run Length variant (RL) is realized in sections of images of steels treated with the same procedure. A procedure for the qualitative detection of these zones in laser steel alloying and to study the texture modification in the heat affected zone is obtained. In this way is evaluated the proposed descriptors effectiveness.
